Adrift (stylized as ADR1FT) is a video adventure game in first person developed by Three One Zero and published by 505 Games. He was released March 28, 2016 for Microsoft Windows, and later in 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The story follows an astronaut floating in the wreckage of a destroyed space station with no memory of the incident. During the game, players find clues that piece together the events of the incident and try to repair the escape vehicle to return home.
Development began in 2013, after the resignation designer Adam Orth from Microsoft. The development team is considering gambling as an “experiment in the first person,” deliberately avoiding violence. Orth compares the game to upheaval in his life following his controversial comments on DRM proposal of Xbox One.
Adrift is played from a view to first person. In the game, players take control of Alex commander Oshima, floating and moving in all directions through the open environment, which occurs in weightlessness. The environment can be fully explored, but players will be selected to explore too far. One constraint is a limit oxygen that players must follow to avoid suffocation. When running low on oxygen, the vision becomes blurred players; they should get an oxygen tank to stay alive. Players move through five areas, completing a series of puzzles. Players are able to locate the audio logs that will expand on the events of the incident; the game is set in the year 2037. Players will also find objects of the dead crew and must decide to return to Earth. The game is said to have two main objectives: to survive and return home safely.
Design Adrift was a direct consequence of the events that happened to Adam Orth in 2013. When Xbox One Microsoft announced it received a controversy for its digital rights management that would force users to stay online to use console. After watching people argue that, Orth-then a creative director at Microsoft-called “deal with it”, which resulted in a mass of complaints leading to the resignation of Orth society. This led him to move from Seattle to Southern California. Orth noted that the game is a metaphor, comparing the events of his life; both Orth and the player character are in the midst of a disaster, and must “do the hard work to put things together.” He said that the game is about “action, consequences and redemption.” Orth wrote the story without the science fiction or supernatural themes in mind, saying he “wanted to do stories and characters that resonate with people the hope because they are not typical stories of video games. ”
After resigning from Microsoft, Orth approached his former colleague Omar Aziz with the idea of founding a new studio. Although initially hesitant, Aziz agree with the idea after hearing the height of Orth for Adrift, and the two founded the Three One Zero development studio. After building a prototype for the game, Orth contacted and hired other former colleagues. The development team found that they were interested Adrift development because of its unique character, which distinguishes it from the first person shooters. “I became very tired FPS over the years, having worked on them for many years, I have had enough of them,” said the producer Matteo Marsala. The team is considering gambling as an “experiment in the first person,” making intentional diversion of violence. Game development ultimately lasted about 13 months, with a core team of six developers. Throughout the development, the team has hired various contractors for a number of weeks to complete certain tasks, such as animation.
The team noted that the “look” of the game was the biggest change that occurred during development. Orth compared the art style of the game with minimalist presentation of the film 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey. Orth has also recognized the comparisons between the film Adrift and Gravity 2013, indicating that the game was designed before the release of the film. After seeing the movie, he was confident that the two were “very different.” The team considers the scope and scale of the game to be similar to gravity, the immersion of the world similar to the Half-Life series, as well as the presentation and narration similar to Journey (2012). Orth has also admitted that it was largely inspired by the game Proteus (2013) while developing Adrift. The game logo was designed by graphic designer Cory Schmitz, while the team has hired Hogarth de la Plante as a prototype of artist, [16] Dave Flamburis as a technical artist, Oscar Cafaro as a conceptual artist and Chad King as an artist of the environment. The soundtrack of the game was composed primarily by Orth, with contributions from the American group Weezer. Game sounds were recorded by Al Nelson Skywalker Sound, at Skywalker Ranch. Nelson said he intends to “[speak] a story and [this] emotion with sound.”
The game is developed simultaneously for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game has a release date of March 28, 2016 for Windows, and later in 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; it was originally planned for release in September 2015, but was delayed to coincide with the launch of the Oculus Rift. The game will feature support Oculus Rift, a characteristic they heard from is the game design. The original prototype for the game was developed for potential publishers by three in ten weeks, using the Unity game engine. The functionality of the game has been completely rebuilt for use with Unreal Engine 4.
Adrift was officially announced June 4, 2014, before the full gameplay reveal at The Game Awards on December 5, 2014. A trailer for the game leak a few days before E3 2015 in June 2015. On June 12, 2015, Three One Zero announced a partnership with Top Cow Productions and Image Comics to produce a comic book series based on Adrift; the first issue was published the same day. The series is written by Matt Hawkins, with illustrations by Luca Casalanguida.
